DESCRIPTION: Wing length 6 - 8.25mm. A local species that is easily identified by its habitat and black abdomen with obvious dusty grey spots on tergites 1 to 4. The legs are black, the thorax of the same colour and the antennae are bright orange. The face is somewhat blunt in appearance. BEHAVIOUR: The adult flies low to the ground in and around the larval foodplant, namely Ramsons. The larvae feed on the bulbs of the host plant tunnelling into the flesh. DISTRIBUTION: Common throughout but quite localised. HABITAT: Woods, woodland edges and sheltered hedgerows where foodplant occurs. PERIOD: March to early June. |
